Music Scales

10/30/2014

Improvization is very important part of music education. The educator should provide music, which is as various as possible.
One of the ways how to achieve this is to use different music scales.
The most common scales which are used in the western music are major, minor (with 3 variants: natural, harmonic and melodic) and pentatonic scale. A simple hint - pentatonic scale are black keys on the keyboard; these are simple to use by children themselves.
However, these are not the only possible scales. Different cultures have developed different scales. There is a nice list of them here.
Furthermore, the scale depends on the sound spectrum of the instruments - our scales are suitable for string and wind instruments. But we will discuss this in more details another time (sign up here).
Anyway, think about it and use it in your teaching!

How To Introduce Music To Children: Early childhood learning principles and methods (EduMusica - music education for children Book 1)
Do you love children? Do you love music? If "Yes", then this is a book you should read!
Early childhood learning is extremely important for later development. Music is the universal language and is also deeply connected with emotions. This is why quality introduction to music in early childhood is very important.
The book describes principles and proven methods of how to introduce music to children. This approach is focused on children, which are 3 to 6 years old, and do not play an instrument yet. However, their musical skills are developed in an optimal way in order to allow them to play any instrument after the completion of this music introduction training.
The book describes the basic learning proces, as well as methods how to develop the child's voice, the sense of rhythm and melody, and also motoric skills.
This book is inteded primarily for kindergarten educators, which can improve their musical activities in the classes. However, also parents can find a lot of useful information regarding how to implement the pricniples of early childhood learning. The learning process should be done through play, through various musical activities, which develop certain musical skills. You will find descriptions of such musical activities, along with suggested instruments you should use (bells, claves, whistles, drums, etc.). It will help you to conduct musical classes in kindergartens, or have fun while developing your child's potential.
The book tries to be concise, giving short and simple answers, allowing you to implement the suggested activities as soon as possible. However, if you want to explore deeper, you are invited to visit our website www.EduMusica.es, where you will be able to find additional resources, like videos with examples of some musical activities, or more in-depth explanation of the principles and methods.

Let me explain one of the most useful activities for introduction of the concept of melody and pitch.
The teacher uses the sliding whistle to present melodic patterns. The children repeat them and show the melody movement with their hand.
This activity is later upgraded into introduction of musical notation.
